Ripping UHD Blu-Ray DVDs

To rip a UHD Blu-Ray DVD:

  1. Install MakeMKV.

To do this on Arch Linux, you'll need to build and install the makemkv package from the Arch User Repository (AUR):

    cd downloads
    curl https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/snapshot/makemkv.tar.gz
    tar -xvzf makemkv.tar.gz
    cd makemkv
    makepkg --sync-deps --rm-deps
    makepkg --install --clean
    cd ..
    rm -rf makemkv
  2. Activate MakeMKV for free using the beta key available in this MakeMKV.com forum post.

  3. Update the preferences to include small files on the disc (i.e., special features).

  4. Set the default backup directory (i.e., where the disc's files will be saved to).

  5. Connect a compatible UHD optical disk drive. Recommended drives can be found in this MakeMKV forum post.
  6. Read the disc, select the titles and content to include, then start the backup.
